Africa Center's Academic Dean, Dr. Raymond Gilpin, discussed emerging security threats across the African continent and implications for regional and global stability at the Strategy Defense Policy course, organized by the William J. Perry Center for Hemispheric Defense Studies at the National Defe

nse University in Washington DC on May 6, 2014. Fifty-four security sector professionals from Latin American countries participated in the course.

Dr. Gilpin explained how violent conflict is driven by complex socio-economic, political and ideological factors, and he analyzed recent initiatives that address national and regional conflict in Africa.  He noted the upsurge in trans-Atlantic criminal networks and pointed out the importance of increased collaboration between African and Latin American countries.  In view of the implications for global human security and trade, Dr. Gilpin explained the role a broad range of stakeholders (including the private sector) in supporting national and regional efforts to address instability, protect human rights and resolve/deter violent conflict.
