Drying water thwarts rice self-sufficiency dream
ASC17-1 alumni Tenzin Namgyel (Butan) has published a second in a series of articles based on his Fellows Project. "Drying water thwarts rice self-sufficency dream" was published in Kuensel newspaper on July 10, 2017.
The article looks at the impact of water shortages and poor agricultural practices on rice production.
"The water sources for both irrigation and drinking are fast disappearing due to global warming," stated Namgyel in his article. "Although no studies have been undertaken to ensure the disappearance of irrigation water due to global warming, rice famers said that the rising temperature contribute to the drying of water.
According to one farmer he interviewed: “It’s worrying to see our water drying up every year. It’s not the water that is drying, but our food.”
Bhutan's government is working on mitigation efforts to help improve both resiliency and improve agricultural practices.
