On May 28, the Security Nexus Webinar, hosted by Dr. James Minnich, Colonel USA Retired and DKI APCSS Professor, featured a compelling discussion with Dr. Rouben Azizian, Professor at Massey University’s Centre for Defence and Security Studies, New Zealand. The session focused on the state of the war in Ukraine, its impact on global power dynamics, the evolving security landscape in the Indo-Pacific region, and so much more.

State of the War in Ukraine

Dr. Azizian provided an update on recent developments in Ukraine, highlighting key battles and strategic shifts. He emphasized that these developments are crucial in determining the conflict’s outcome and reshaping Ukraine’s political landscape. The prolonged nature of the war has led to significant destruction and displacement but also to a resilient Ukrainian defense bolstered by international support. The war’s trajectory will have lasting effects on Ukraine’s governance and integration with Western institutions.

Global Power Shifts

The discussion then turned to how the Ukraine conflict has reshaped global power dynamics. Dr. Azizian noted the intensified rivalry between the West, Russia, and China. Through sanctions and military aid to Ukraine, the West’s unified response has strengthened NATO and EU cohesion. Conversely, Russia’s isolation has pushed it closer to China, creating a formidable partnership with significant geopolitical implications. This realignment challenges the traditional US-led world order, suggesting a shift towards a more multipolar global structure.

Indo-Pacific Security

Dr. Azizian also addressed the conflict’s impact on the Indo-Pacific region, where threat perceptions and defense priorities are being reassessed. The Ukraine war is a stark reminder of the potential for regional conflicts and the importance of military readiness. Indo-Pacific nations, particularly those involved in the Quad (Australia, India, Japan, and the US) and AUKUS (Australia, UK, and US), are enhancing their defense capabilities and strategic partnerships to counter China’s growing assertiveness.

Evolution of Regional Alliances

The webinar explored how the Ukraine conflict influences regional alliances like the Quad and AUKUS. Dr. Azizian highlighted that these alliances are being strengthened in response to global security threats, with a renewed focus on joint military exercises, intelligence sharing, and coordinated strategies to maintain regional stability and deter aggression.

This insightful webinar underscored the far-reaching implications of the Ukraine war, emphasizing the need for vigilant and adaptive security strategies in the Indo-Pacific and beyond. Dr. Minnich and Dr. Azizian’s discussion provided valuable perspectives on how nations can navigate the shifting global power landscape and enhance their security postures in response to emerging threats.

Book Recommendations

During the session, Dr. Azizian recommended two insightful books for a deeper understanding of the conflict:

“The Russo-Ukrainian War: The Return of History” by Serhii Plokhy (W. W. Norton & Company, 2023) provides a detailed account of the war’s historical and cultural contexts, helping readers understand the conflict’s deeper roots.

“Our Enemies Will Vanish: The Russian Invasion and Ukraine’s War of Independence” by Yaroslav Trofimov (Penguin Press, 2024) offers a contemporary perspective on the war based on firsthand experiences and in-depth reporting from the front lines.
