      Tallinn – Members of the Estonian Ministry of Defense engaged with a team of DIILS attorneys on several areas of interest, including maritime and air targeting issues, support to civil authorities, and methodologies for tailoring legal support to operations.  The discussions brought in stakeholders from across the Estonian security sector and a preliminary engagement plan was developed to best address primary focus areas.       Lieutenant Colonel Vu Van Hiep (Army, Vietnam) attended the inaugural Legal Aspects of Peacekeeping Operations (LAPKO) resident course in 2017 and has already begun applying what he learned at DIILS as a UN military observer in South Sudan.  LTC Vu stated:  "I learned a lot from the LAPKO course that has helped during my mission..particularly about Status of Force Agreements and the impact of common incidents caused by armed groups against SOFA, especially on freedom of movement provisions."  In his role as a UN military obser Continue reading

      DIILS PARTNERS WITH GEORGIAN DEFENSE FORCES ON LEGAL REFORM

      Tbilisi - Deputy Minister Nukri Gelashvili, and legal leaders from the Georgian Ministry of Defense partnered with DIILS attorneys on a review of a pending revision to the Georgian Defense Code.  This Code will serve as the Georgian Defense Forces' overarching legislation and is designed to complement new amendments to the Georgian Constitution.  The team also planned future engagements which will help to build institutional capacity in the Defense Forces.
