IN HONDURAS, DIILS WORKSHOP INCLUDES MILITARY, HUMAN RIGHTS NGOS
The Defense Institute of International Legal Studies conducted a workshop in Honduras 12-14 August 2013 on Human Rights and the Law of Armed Conflict in military operations. Attendees hailed from the Honduran Army, Navy, Air Force, and various Honduran human rights organizations, including the ICRC and CODEH (Comité para la Defensa de los Derechos Humanos). The U.S. team included DIILS subject matter experts from the U.S. Marine Corps, Coast Guard, Army and DIILS’ civilian Regional Program Director for the Americas. During the workshop, participants discussed the fundamental principles of human rights and the law of armed conflict, and applied them in case studies drawn from recent experiences of Honduran and U.S. military forces.
Discussions were animated, informative, and helped foster greater understanding -not only between the United States and Honduras, but also between the Honduran military and human rights NGOs."
