US WORKSHOP IN VIETNAM FOCUSES ON MARITIME DOMAIN AWARENESS
The Hanoi Hilton was the setting for a bilateral workshop on Maritime Domain Awareness with 20 representatives from the authorities responsible for maritime security in Vietnam.
The Workshop promoted (1) coordination and information exchange among the authorities responsible for maritime security in Vietnam and (2) the establishment of reference documents for marine management, such as maritime policy, operational methods, standard operating procedures, and training programs for surveillance and maritime management.
Workshop participants included 20 representatives from the maritime security agencies of Vietnam, such as the marine Police, Navy, Border Guard, Customs Department, Maritime Administration and delegate agencies. The Vietnam marine Police was officially renamed the Vietnamese Coast Guard shortly after the conclusion of the workshop.
Major General Nguyen Van Tuong, Commissioner of the Vietnam marine Police, noted the importance of Maritime Domain Awareness and inter-agency cooperation at the opening ceremony. “This workshop will be a good opportunity for the agencies responsible for ensuring maritime security of Vietnam to exchange their experience with American scholars. At the same time, this is an opportunity for the agencies responsible for ensuring maritime security in Vietnam to come together, understand each other better, and work together to ensure a safe maritime environment in Vietnam”, Tuong said.
The workshop was sponsored by the United States Defense Threat Reduction Agency and the Defense Institute of International Legal Studies.
