COLONEL WEIR ASSUMES THE DIRECTORSHIP AT DIILS
NEWPORT, RI, 1 Aug 2014. Colonel Steven B. Weir, JA, United States Army, assumed the directorship of the Defense Institute of International Legal Studies (DIILS), in a change of command ceremony officiated by Vice Admiral Joseph W. Rixey, Director of the Defense Security Cooperation Agency. Colonel Weir is the 11th Director of DIILS.
Colonel Weir holds a Juris Doctorate from the University of Dayton School of Law, and a Master’s degree in Strategic Studies from the U.S. Army War College. COL Weir entered active duty in the U.S. Army Judge Advocate General’s Corps in 1991. He has served as a claims officer, trial counsel, defense counsel, senior defense counsel, chief of operational law, chief of military justice, administrative and civil law attorney, and deputy staff judge advocate. His recent assignments include Staff Judge Advocate at Fort Jackson, South Carolina, at United States Army Special Operations Command, and at the United States Army Special Forces Command (Airborne), Fort Bragg, North Carolina. He also served as the Deputy Staff Judge Advocate at United States Special Operations Command.
Colonel Weir deployed to Iraq in 2004 as the Army prosecutor on the Saddam Hussein case. He also deployed to Afghanistan in 2008 – 2009, where he served as the Deputy Staff Judge Advocate of the NATO International Security Assistance Force and the Chief Targeting Attorney.
