DIILS WELCOMES NEWEST INTERNATIONAL OPERATIONS OFFICER ABOARD
The Defense Institute of International Legal Studies is pleased to welcome our newest International Operations Officer, Lieutenant Kristen Anastos, JAG Corps, USN. Her responsibilities at DIILS will include planning and leading mobile engagements, serving as team leader, and facilitating bilateral discussions on various legal topics.
LT Anastos graduated from The College of New Jersey in 2005 with a BA in Journalism and then attended Seton Hall University School of Law, where she was commissioned through the Student Program in 2008. After graduating from Seton Hall, LT Anastos attended Officer Development School and Naval Justice School in Newport, Rhode Island. LT Anastos is a member of the bars of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and the State of New Jersey.
In December 2008, LT Anastos checked onboard Naval Legal Service Office, Mid-Atlantic (NLSO MIDLANT). While there, she served as a Legal Assistance attorney, Defense Counsel, and the Officer-in-Charge of Naval Legal Service Detachment, Naval Air Station Oceana. As Defense Counsel, LT Anastos’ notable cases included representing a Navy SEAL who was acquitted of detainee abuse and an Operations Specialist Second Class who was found Not Guilty by Reason of Insanity.
During her tenure at NLSO MIDLANT, LT Anastos was sent TAD to Destroyer Squadron TWO FOUR, where she acted as the legal advisor to the U.S. Commodore during Joint Warrior 09-2. This exercise involved reconciling NATO ROE with U.S. ROE across multiple AORs, as well as cooperation with the navies of several NATO countries.
In March 2011, LT Anastos reported to USS HARRY S. TRUMAN (CVN 75) as the Assistant Command Judge Advocate. While onboard TRUMAN, LT Anastos selected for Career Status and served on the JAGC Detailing Working Group. In addition to her legal duties, LT Anastos also attained her Junior Officer of the Watch and Junior Officer of the Deck qualifications during TRUMAN’s pre-deployment workup cycle.
LT Anastos’ awards include the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medals and the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal.
