The "International Law of Military Operations" (ILOMO) Course held from 11 to 28 June 2012 prepared military legal advisors to advise commanders on the legal aspects of operations.

International participants confer with U.S. Judge Advocate counterparts.

ILOMO is taught in tandem with the U.S. Naval Justice School "Law of Military Operations" (LOMO) course in Newport Rhode Island. 29 international military students attending ILOMO worked alongside 30 U.S. Judge Advocates to learn about and discuss such topics as law of armed conflict, rules of engagement, and legal aspects of humanitarian relief and cyber operations.

One ILOMO participant commented that "The interaction between countries is very important to underline. It is a great opportunity to know how other countries apply the law."

Another said: "For me the most important (benefit of the course was to prepare me to) work as a Legal (Legal Advisor) in a multinational coalition. I think (ILOMO) is a good preparation for working in an international mission."

A participant who is scheduled to serve in the United Mission in Liberia (UNMIL) expressed appreciation for instruction on legal aspects of humanitarian assistance.

The next offering of ILOMO will be 10-27 June 2013. For more information about ILOMO and other DIILS Resident Programs may be found in the "upcoming events" section of the DIILS web site WWW.DIILS.ORG.
