DIILS presents plaque to Mexican Navy Admiral.

In April 2012, an international DIILS team consisting of two DIILS attorneys, two attorneys from OSJA NORTCOM, one British military attorney, and one retired Sri Lankan Army officer now working as a human rights official in Sri Lanka, provided a law of armed conflict and human rights seminar to 43 Mexican Navy and Marine line officers and military attorneys.  The participants included 14 Navy Captains/Marine Colonels and came from a wide variety of military specialties, including Marine Infantry, Special Forces, Surface Warfare, Naval Aviation, as well as Judge Advocates.

The seminar featured a combination of interactive discussions, case studies, and practical exercises focusing on the law governing domestic military operations and the importance of complying with human rights law in the conduct of military operations. The highlights of the seminar were case studies on the British experience in Northern Ireland and the Sri Lankan experience with the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Elam as well as case studies on US experiences.
