DIILS conducted a 5 day IMET engagement to promote the development of military justice capacity and enhance rule of law in Cote d'Ivoire.  The participants included civilian and military Ministry of Defense personnel, magistrates, NGOs and Human Rights Groups.
The multi-service DIILS team, consisting of USMC, USAR and USCG personnel, discussed the processes for addressing misconduct or allegations of misconduct in the U.S. military justice system.  The discussion was facilitated by a comparative analysis of the United States' and Ivoirian military justice systems, featuring presentations by Ivoirian military and judicial personnel, as well as the United Nations Rule of Law Section in Cote d'Ivoire.
The seminar also included a discussion on the application of military justice in armed conflict and emphasized the importance of having knowledgeable lawyers available to advise commanders on the law of armed conflict and the legal aspects of command responsibility.
