LEGAL ASPECTS OF COMBATING TERRORISM: FOCUS ON INTERNATIONAL COOPERATION
In an effort to achieve the goal of international cooperation to combat terrorism within the rule of law, DIILS offered the 8th Course on Legal Aspects of Combating Terrorism (LCT) from 23 August to 10 September 2010 to 20 participants from 16 countries. During the course, LCT participants visited New York City and received latest updates from a representative of the UN Counter Terrorism Committee (CTC) Executive Directorate on UN efforts to assist member states' legal development to ensure that those who commit terrorist acts are brought to justice. LCT participants also visited UN Headquarters and some met with a representative of their nation's mission. One participant said that during this meeting "the (mission) official explained in detail some of the problems faced by the UN having to deal with different perceptions on terrorism especially the challenges when it comes to the implementation of the international counter terrorism) conventions. The meetings complemented the lessons learned from both DIILS presentations and the presentation given by the UN CTC. I was able to comprehend better after the meeting with my Mission representative, since some issues were easily discussed in my native language."
