DIILS MILITARY LAW DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM VISITS SENATE COMMITTEE WASHINGTON, DC
Nine international students from eight countries visited with staff members of the Senate Armed Services Committee during a week-long visit to Washington D.C. as part of their ten-week Military Law Development Program (MLDP) course in Newport. During their meeting with professional committee staff members, the MLDP participants learned about the U.S. legislative process and the legislative authorities that govern the U.S. military. Later in the week, the MLDP participants visited the United States Court of Appeals for the Armed Forces (USCAAF) and met with one of the five judges for a discussion on the role of USCAAF. One participant commented that one of the strengths of the MLDP course was "the opportunity to visit the most important governmental and judicial bodies and meet professionals working there." Another participant observed that the comparative discussions during the MLDP course allowed him to gain "a better understanding of my own military justice system."
The DIILS MLDP course offers a comprehensive curriculum of military justice and advanced study of international and operational law. The three components of the 10-week MLDP include the Military Justice course, the Law and Armed Conflict and Human Rights (LCHR) course, and the International Law of Military Operations (ILOMO) course. Participants learn advanced legal concepts of constitutional law, procedural due process, and use of legal codes through the study of international law and the comparative study of military law of various nations.
MLDP II (MASL P176029) will be offered again 18 April to 23 June 2016. More information about DIILS Resident Courses is available in our course catalog https://globalnetplatform.org/system/files/517/DIILS_2016-Catalog_FINAL_for%20DIILS.ORG_.pdf
