DIILS TEAM VISITS UNITED ARAB EMIRATES TO CONTINUE BUILDING MILITARY LEGAL PARTNERSHIP
ABU DHABI - DIILS engaged with the legal officers of the United Arab Emirates Military Justice Directorate in August 2015 in Abu Dhabi and Dubai. The UAE Senior Legal Advisor, Brigadier General Salem Al-Kaabi, Director of Military Justice, and the Chief Military General Prosecutor hosted the U.S. team, including Coast Guard Judge Advocate General, Rear Admiral Steven Poulin, and DIILS Director, Colonel Steven Weir. The purpose of the visit was to plan future engagement on a variety of legal topics. During the visit, the Emiratis discussed the 2012 reforms to the military justice system, the role of legal advisors throughout the military, and, through visits to the Abu Dhabi Institute and Dubai Judicial Institute, professional legal education and the court-martial process. This exchange followed a successful visit by BG Al-Kaabi and his team in early 2015 to learn about the U.S. military justice system. The engagement concluded with a commitment to continue building a legal partnership through military legal exchanges and Emirati participation in DIILS courses.
