DIILS SUPPORTS ENHANCEMENTS TO MONGOLIA’S DEFENSE LEGAL CAPACITY
ULAANBAATAR -- A DIILS team engaged in discussions with the Office of Defense Cooperation here and with Mongolian defense representatives on the design of a sustainable professional development program for military legal advisors. DIILS continues to implement a multi-year Defense Institution-Building plan to build a cadre of qualified military legal advisors who can deploy with Mongolian units participating in UN peacekeeping operations. The plan consists of periodic DIILS engagement in Mongolia, as well as professional development of Mongolian lawyers in the U.S., to include courses at DIILS, the U.S. Army Judge Advocate General School, and other US service schools. During the 11-15 January visit, the team also conducted a two-day Human Rights and International Humanitarian Law seminar for 28 Mongolian officers, in which there was robust discussion of the current legal challenges in the international realm, particularly the concept of deployed multinational peacekeeping operations.
