Welcome to the latest per Concordiam partial edition! Seventy-two years after NATO’s founding, the Alliance is busy adapting to a changing security environment. Preparations are well underway to adopt a new NATO Strategic Concept and have it endorsed at the NATO summit in Madrid this week. The last such document was approved in November 2010 and has stood the test of time. It presented a fine balance between collective defense, crisis management and cooperative security. Remarkably, it required no revision despite Russia’s annexation of the Crimea and aggression in Ukraine, the global war on terror and emerging great power competition. But now is the time for the Alliance to start a new cycle of major documents and to create official NATO guidance on various levels.
Marshall Center alumni and experts examine the future of European security as NATO leaders gather in Madrid for their 2022 summit.
