In late 2011, the United States launched its “Pivot to Asia” strategic shift, reemphasizing its role in the Asia-Pacific region as a Pacific power. With the war in Iraq over and the drawdown of U.S. troop levels in Afghanistan, President Obama approved the strategic shift and the refocusing of foreign policy, trade and defense policies on the area, which is regarded as the fastest-growing economic region in the world and a region essential to U.S. exports. Part of the defense realignment to Asia-Pacific by 2020 includes the realignment of a major portion of U.S. Naval power to the region. According to U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta, “our goal is to work closely with all the nations of this region to confront common challenges and promote peace, prosperity and security.” An increased U.S. focus on the Asia-Pacific region also translates into less U.S. engagement in Europe and provides associated challenges and opportunities for European Security and Defense beyond 2020.
The purpose of this conference is to provide Marshall Center distinguished alumni (ministers, deputy ministers, chiefs of defense, ambassadors, and parliamentarians) an opportunity to educate themselves and exchange information on the future of U.S. - European Relations in light of the recently announced U.S. strategic power shift towards Asia-Pacific.
