Alumni Publication: "Libyans Receiving Military Training in South Africa" by Hussein Solomon
On 30 July 2024, think tank Research on Islam and Muslims in Africa (RIMA) published NESA Center alumnus Hussein Solomon's latest article titled "Libyans Receiving Military Training in South Africa."
"The 95 Libyans were sent by Libyan warlord Khalifa Haftar for training to South Africa. Libya is currently divided between an UN-back Tripoli government in the west and Haftar’s forces control the east of the country anchored in Benghazi and Tobruk. Previously, Haftar’s militias were trained and assisted by Russia’s Wagner Group. This was funded by the UAE. Unhappy with the results, ex-Irish soldiers in the form of Irish Training Solutions were contracted. Still unable to overthrow the Tripoli government and breakout from eastern Libya, Haftar’s forces it seems were now being trained by Milites Dei," writes Solomon.
