DIILS ENGAGES WITH LEBANON ON HUMAN RIGHTS AND INTERNATIONAL HUMANITARIAN LAW
BEIRUT, 29 July 2016 - DIILS completed a Human Rights and International Humanitarian Law seminar attended by 17 officers of the Lebanese Armed Forces. This three-day seminar focused on the impact of human rights law and international humanitarian law on domestic and international military operations. Using case studies and lessons learned from recent U.S. operations, the DIILS team emphasized the importance of conducting military operations according to applicable national and international human rights law as well as operationally appropriate international humanitarian law. The DIILS team also discussed the importance of conducting prompt, independent, impartial, and thorough investigations of every human rights allegation against the military. The participants expressed their appreciation to DIILS for tailoring this seminar to their most pressing concerns and for sharing U.S. lessons learned on topics relevant to their mission.
