By Rustam Burnashev

This chapter argues that the weaknesses associated with Central Asian states tend to keep states in the region relatively exposed to penetration by external forces. According to the author, these forms of weaknesses allow sub-state actors to play a greater role in the determination of regional security and create power vacuums in which routes that can be used for trafficking drugs, humans and weapons can flourish.
