Figments
From APCSS | anonymous | 10 Feb 2022

On February 7, 2022, DKI APCSS Director Peter Gumataotao appeared on Figments: The Power of Imagination, a podcast sponsored by Think Tech Hawaii and hosted by a former DKI APCSS Director Lieutenant General (Ret.) Dan “Fig” Leaf.

In the podcast, Director Gumataotao speaks about his background growing up in Guam and his leadership experience as an officer in the United States Navy. When talking about DKI APCSS he explains that the Center is appropriately located on Maluhia Road. “Maluhia,” in Hawaiian, means a “haven for peace.”

“[DKI APCSS] is a world class institution,” said Director Gumataotao. “This institution inspires a free and prosperous Indo-Pacific by promoting transparency, inclusiveness, and a collaborative approach to solving issues.”

When asked what is in the future for DKI APCSS, Director Gumataotao previewed a new upcoming course titled Comprehensive Security Cooperation (CSC).  The new course, which is set to commence in February, will synthesize learning in maritime security, terrorism, and crisis management, and will bring together attendees from a broad range of expertise.

In ending his remarks, Director Gumataotao addressed the various security practitioners who attend DKI APCSS’ programs.

“I want to thank everyone out there that has the oars in the water and are rowing hard,” said Director Gumataotao. “You are not alone. When you come to the Center, you are coming to a haven of peace to build on that momentum you are generating. We are here for you.”

Lieutenant General (Ret.) Dan “Fig” Leaf served as the DKI APCSS Director from 2012-2016. Rear Admiral (Ret.) Peter Gumataotao has served as the Director of DKI APCSS since 2018.
