U.S. AND AUSTRALIA HOST PACIFIC ISLAND MARITIME LAW WORKSHOP
Legal Officials from 21 Central and Western Pacific States Discussed
Regional Maritime Law Issues in Sydney, Australia.
The Defense Institute of International Legal Studies (DIILS) and Australia's Asia Pacific Centre for Military Law (APCML) hosted a five-day legal workshop, entitled "Contemporary Maritime Issues in the Western and Central Pacific". Topics included the law of the sea, maritime law enforcement, fisheries enforcement, humanitarian assistance/disaster relief, and interagency cooperation.
The goal was to have a dynamic and interactive workshop of, for, and by the nations of the Western and Central Pacific, with active support from neighbors in Asia and elsewhere (e.g., US/AUS/NZ/France). The workshop encouraged Pacific Island Nations to work together to address their common challenges by building complementary capacity and solutions that will increase regional security.
The program was conducted from 17-21 September at APCML's new facility in Sydney, Australia. The 62 participants from 21 nations included attorneys general and chiefs of police from many of the Pacific Island Nations. The U.S. team featured the Judge Advocate General of the U.S. Coast Guard and the Staff Judge Advocate of U.S. Pacific Command.”
The DIILS team included U.S. Coast Guard Judge Advocate General,
RADM Frederick J. Kenney, center, and several U.S. Coast Guard JAGs,
