DIILS recently conducted a program in Bujumbura, Burundi on the law of armed conflict and human rights, as mandated by Section 1206 of the National Defense Authorization Act. Fifty-eight soldiers from the Burundian National Defense Forces participated. The program focused on emerging issues regarding the law of armed conflict, and the unique challenges facing a professional military engaged in internal armed conflict with rebel groups. It also included case studies, presented by international law expert CAPT Gregory Noone, JAGC, USN, on war crimes and gender violence, with a focus on the tools for prevention.
