DIILS SEMINAR IN BOTSWANA FOCUSES ON HUMAN RIGHTS, HUMANITARIAN LAW

DIILS conducted an international humanitarian law and human rights seminar in Gaborone, Botswana, with 35 Botswana Defence Force (BDF) personnel. The participants included 31 field grade BDF officers in military Specialties including Air Defense, Armor, Artillery, Aviation, Infantry, Military Attorneys, Medical, Provost Marshal, Signals, and Special Forces.
The team, led by a DIILS International Operations Officer, included judge advocates from the North Carolina Army National Guard, the U.S. Air Force Office of The Judge Advocate General and U.S. AFRICA Command.
The September 2012 seminar focused on the law governing domestic and international military operations and the importance of complying with human rights law and international humanitarian law in the conduct of such operations. It featured interactive discussions, case studies and practical exercises. The BDF officers gave presentations on their legal and operational challenges, and all participants appreciated the opportunity to exchange viewpoints and experiences.
