U. S., EGYPT DISCUSS BORDER SECURITY CAPACITY AND PROCEDURES
NEWPORT, RI -- Seven Egyptian military officers participated in a DIILS engagement on border security and refugee rights in Newport, RI and Boston, MA from 25-29 August 2014. Participants included one military judge, one naval officer and five army officers, all of whom are responsible for land or maritime border security operations in Egypt. During the week-long engagement, the participants met with U.S. Army, Navy, Coast Guard, Customs and Border Patrol officials. The event was designed to illustrate the extent of institutional capacity to respond to border security and refugee issues.
One of the highlights of the engagement was a visit to U.S. Coast Guard Sector Boston, where participants toured several Coast Guard working vessels and observed port security operations while aboard a U.S. Coast Guard vessel in Boston Harbor. This unique opportunity for the participants to witness the scope of U.S. Coast Guard operations emphasized the importance of a whole-of-government approach to effective maritime border security, including cooperation between local, State and Federal law enforcement entities.
