Captain Gregory P. Noone, JAGC, USN

Captain Gregory P. Noone, JAGC, USN, Commanding officer of DIILS’ Naval Reserve unit in 2011-2012, former active duty DIILS International Operations Officer and current DIILS adjunct instructor, has been named Fairmont State University 2012 Professor of the Year.  The DIILS family extends our heartfelt congratulations to him on this receiving this honor.

Dr. Noone has been the director of the National Security and Intelligence Program at Fairmont State University since 2007. He received a Ph.D. in Political Science/International Relations from West Virginia University; a J.D. from Suffolk University Law School; a master's in Defense Studies from the Royal Military College of Canada; a M.A. in International Affairs from the Catholic University of America; and a B.A. in political science from Villanova University.  He was the Dr. Alan Hammock Fellow at West Virginia University, and has received multiple Navy and Army Commendation medals and the U.S. Department of Defense's Meritorious Service Medal, among others. In 2012, he was the Fairmont Times West Virginian Educator of the Year.

According to Fairmont State University President Dr. Maria Rose, "Dr. Noone initiated the process to establish the National Security and Intelligence program, as well as the invaluable practical experience that students would gain from such a program.  With encouragement from Dr. Noone, this program was established and an Open Source Information Exchange (OSIX) lab was developed in conjunction with the academic major."

The OSIX lab has provided Fairmont State University students with the opportunity to assist the United States government intelligence community with actionable intelligence information.  "It was only through Dr. Noone's foresight that such an innovative program was established" observes President Rose.  In addition to his invaluable addition of the OSIX, Professor Noone has served as a role model and positive influence, encouraging students to attend graduate school and to pursue a degree in law.  He works with the Fairmont State University Honors Program and provides support for the Honors residential learning community.

Dr. Christina Lavorata, Fairmont State's provost and vice-president of academic affairs, notes that she is "… proud to speak of him as a most deserving recipient of the Faculty Merit Foundation's Professor of the Year.  He serves his students, his family, and his nation with intelligence and dignity.
