    The Africa Center for Strategic Studies (ACSS) convened a multilateral workshop on Countering Violent Extremism (CVE) in Africa in Nairobi, Kenya, on June 13-17, 2016. Building on the ACSS ‘Countering Violent Extremism’ Series, this workshop took stock of the latest research and policy recommendations regarding CVE in Africa, in order to refine findings and advance analysis to inform African and partner defense and security leaders formulating and implementing CVE programs today.     As part of a two week visit to the United States, a delegation of faculty and students from Cameroon's International War College visited the Africa Center for a day of discussions on a variety of topics on June 13, 2016. Led by the Commandant of the War College, Major General Esaie NGAMBOU, discussed topics such as Cameroon and the U.S. (Past and Future Perspectives), Countering Violent Extremism: U.S. Counterterrorism Strategy and Africa's Role, and U.S. Support to International Cooperation in Africa.     As in much of Africa, the vast majority of security threats facing Nigeria are internal, often involving irregular forces such as insurgents, criminal gangs, and violent religious extremists. Effectively combating such threats requires cooperation from local communities—cooperation limited by low levels of trust in security forces who often have reputations for corruption, heavy-handedness, and politicization.     The Africa Center, with the support of the National Defence College Nigeria, U.S. Africa Command, and the U.S. State Department, hosted a weeklong Streamlining Interagency in Maritime Security Workshop in Abuja, Nigeria, on 16-20 May. The workshop assembled approximately 55 participants hailing from a wide variety of ministries and military organizations devoted to maritime security.
